BOILER ORDERS AND NUMBERS

Lists boiler types, numbers, fittings, variations, etc. for Doncaster locomotives and boilers.
Coverage ranges from Stirling boilers to BR Standard boilers.

This collection of notes is the result of concentrated research at Doncaster Works (mostly in the Locomotive Drawing Office) during 1960-65, whilst records were still available. This was followed by limited research 1965-70 (at Doncaster), 1970-74 (at Derby) and 1974- (at York), according to where I was based and the time I had available. But before the drawing office had closed, I had retrieved their Repairs to Engines volumes, and eventually (in 1975) deposited them in the new NRM at York. Some of the material I was privileged to see and copy (thanks to the late T.C.B. Miller, then CME of the Eastern Region) would appear not to have survived. This mainly applies to the Boiler, Engine and Tender Orders, which were recorded in tattered books held in the Locomotive Drawing Office. Many years ago I discarded my own notes taken from the Tender Order book, and also notes of Engine Orders for diesel and electric locomotives. Fortunately my other notes remain intact.

This article was revised, particularly covering the 1896-1901 period, not because of new material coming to light, but rather a re-examination of the events taking place during that time. I have also found sufficient notes regarding tenders to be able to prepare a run-down on GNR Tender Orders.
